Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is the 2nd oldest
capital city in Australia (behind Sydney). The
city offers history in its Georgian buildings
and beauty in its harbour. It is surrounded by
Derwent River and Mt. Wellington.
Hobart is also Australia's most southerly city,
and the coastline around it is jagged, bearing
the full brunt of the winter winds roaring in
from the Antarctic.
Hobart's early life revolved very much around
the waterfront, frequented by whalers and colonial
traders.
Hobart is the business centre for Tasmania
and is a modern city of offices, theatres, cinemas
and restaurants. There is a blend of older style
buildings and new modern buildings and there
are many parks and gardens.
The weather in Hobart is temperate - rarely
very hot or very cold.
